Drum Concert Bass

Drum Concert Bass is an original synthesized instrument for large orchestral, timpani-like, and taiko-like gestures. Its clean-sheet engine constructs a dense radiated-pressure response from separately normalized low, body, skin, air, and mallet bands, supported by a restrained tonal anchor. No samples are played.

Center, muted, and rim pads initialize distinct pressure responses derived from the same kettle, concert, or taiko-weighted structure.

Workflow

  1. Insert s3g Drum Concert Bass on a stereo instrument track and begin with note 36 for the center strike.
  2. Route the track to the main stereo output or a headphone monitor.
  3. Set TUNE, FORM, and HEAD TENSION for the main resonant identity. Low Form values favor a kettle, the middle is concert bass, and high values favor paired taiko-like heads.
  4. Use STRIKE POSITION, BEATER HARDNESS, and IMPACT to place the beater contact.
  5. Balance BODY, BLOOM, AIR, and BOUNDARY, then set the three articulation decays.
  6. Set width and shared character before using OUTPUT GAIN for session trim.

Sound Model

The main body is not a stack of exposed, continuously beating sine modes. Independent stochastic pressure sources pass through steep low, body, skin, air, and mallet bands, each normalized for its exact bandwidth and host sample rate. Their different decay laws move the spectrum from a finite broadband strike into low membrane pressure. A raised-cosine onset prevents a single-sample edge. STRIKE POSITION and BEATER HARDNESS redistribute the early bands while six quiet tonal anchors preserve pitch identity.

FORM changes both the pressure bandwidths and the restrained anchor ratios. Low values favor timpani-like quasi-harmonic anchors, the middle produces a broad concert-bass response, and high values widen the paired-head region for taiko-like gestures. AIR controls the upper pressure band; BLOOM lengthens the low response and pitch relaxation. Strike energy begins at slightly raised membrane tension and settles without output saturation.

BOUNDARY and BOUNDARY TONE alter spectral density and the effective head constraint. There is no parallel shell oscillator: measured large Japanese drums radiate chiefly from their membranes, so shell tone is not used as a synthetic level boost. DAMPING shortens the pressure envelopes without changing final output trim.

The architecture is informed by measured additive reconstructions of orchestral bass drum tones, analytical work on coupled Japanese drum heads, measured timpani air loading, and radiated-sound measurements of wadaiko: Fletcher and Bassett, Suzuki and Hwang, Christian et al., and wadaiko radiation measurements. Aggregate onset, crest-factor, decay, and spectral-band measurements from the supplied large-drum references guided validation only; no reference audio, waveform, or sample data is included in the instrument.

MIDI Articulations

MIDI RECEIVE defaults to OMNI; choose CH 1 through CH 16 to isolate the instrument when several s3g Drums share a sequencer stream.

Other notes trigger the center articulation and transpose it according to NOTE TRACKING. Muted and rim remain anchored to the canonical concert-drum pitch.

Presets and Safe Random

The twelve presets include CONCERT FOUNDATION, TIMPANI MALLET, KETTLE HEAD, TAIKO OPEN, TAIKO RIM, GRAND BLOOM, and CINEMA O-DAIKO. RANDOM creates a bounded design across all three forms rather than selecting a preset. It preserves OUTPUT GAIN, NOTE TRACKING, and VELOCITY SENSITIVITY, and keeps optional Character processing restrained.

Output

The low pressure remains centered while upper body and rim detail open with STEREO WIDTH. Set width to 0% for exact dual mono. Each stochastic band is energy-normalized before output, and the clean path remains linear unless the optional Character controls are deliberately engaged. A gentle 23 Hz high-pass prevents infrasonic motion from consuming headroom. Factory strikes stay below the emergency stage at maximum velocity; a fast-catch ceiling near −0.35 dBFS is reserved for extreme overlaps or deliberately raised output gain.
