Drum Floor Tom
Drum Floor Tom is a dedicated low drum voice between a kick and a rack tom. It combines a pitch-moving membrane, dispersed shell modes, a softened head impact, and a separately modeled rim/stick strike. Its transient paths use short band-limited excitations and smoothing designed to avoid isolated click or pop artifacts.
Workflow
- Insert
s3g Drum Floor Tomon a stereo instrument track and begin with note 43 for the head or note 55 for the matching rim. - Route the track to the main stereo output or a headphone monitor.
- Shape the low body with
TUNE,PITCH DROP,BODY,RING, andDAMPING. - Balance head
PUNCHagainstRIM LEVELand the stick controls. - Set width and character, then use
OUTPUT GAINfor the final mix level.
Sound Model
The head articulation excites a membrane fundamental and offset shell modes. PITCH DROP and SWEEP TIME move them toward TUNE; SHELL SPREAD, BODY, RING, BODY DECAY, and DAMPING determine the resonant contour.
The rim articulation couples a tonal rim mode to a short stick-noise band. RIM CHARACTER moves from darker electronic knock toward a brighter hollow edge, while rim and stick decay controls set the gesture's length independently of the head.
MIDI Articulations
MIDI RECEIVE defaults to OMNI; choose CH 1 through CH 16 to accept only that channel when several drum instruments share one sequencer stream.
| Note | Articulation | Pitch reference |
|---|---|---|
| 41 | Low Floor Tom Head | Tracks below the main head. |
| 43 | Floor Tom Head | Canonical head. |
| 37 | Floor Tom Rim / Side Stick | Canonical rim. |
| 53 | Low Floor Tom Rim | Matches head 41. |
| 55 | Floor Tom Rim | Matches head 43. |
Other notes trigger the head and transpose it according to NOTE TRACKING. The named rim notes are normalized to their matching head pitch before the rim model is excited.
Controls
| Panel | Controls | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Shell | Tune / Note Tracking / Pitch Drop / Sweep Time / Shell Spread / Body / Ring / Body Decay / Damping | Defines membrane pitch, resonance, and decay. |
| Head | Punch | Sets the rounded head impact. |
| Rim / Stick | Rim Level / Rim Character / Rim Decay / Stick Level / Stick Tone / Stick Decay | Shapes the tonal edge and short stick contact. |
| Character | Drive / Bias / Compression / Rate Reduction / Bit Depth Reduction / Reconstruction / Character Tone | Adds nonlinear and conversion color. |
| Output / MIDI | Stereo Width / Velocity Sensitivity / Output Gain / MIDI Receive / Trigger | Sets image, dynamics, trim, channel filtering, and head/rim audition. |
Presets and Safe Random
The twelve presets include DEEP FLOOR, OPEN SHELL, LOW HORIZON, WOOD EDGE, DARK RIM, and WIDE UPPER. RANDOM creates a bounded head-and-rim voice and preserves OUTPUT GAIN, NOTE TRACKING, and VELOCITY SENSITIVITY.
Output
The fundamental remains centered as width opens independent upper shell and stick detail. Set STEREO WIDTH to 0% for exact dual mono.
