Drum Cowbell

Drum Cowbell couples two shaped, deliberately inharmonic oscillators to a resonant shell and a short noisy beater. Interval, detune, pulse shape, body, brightness, and pitch bend move it between familiar two-tone cowbells, hollow blocks, dark iron, wooden knocks, and metallic electronic percussion.

Cowbell, muted, and high pads excite one coupled oscillator-and-shell design.

Workflow

  1. Insert s3g Drum Cowbell on a stereo instrument track and sequence notes 56, 57, and 58 for cowbell, muted, and high articulations.
  2. Route the track to the main stereo output or a headphone monitor.
  3. Set TUNE, INTERVAL, DETUNE, and SHAPE for the metal pair.
  4. Balance oscillator DECAY against BODY, NOISE, and their decay controls.
  5. Add BEND if the hit should move in pitch, then set character, width, and output trim.

Sound Model

TUNE anchors the lower oscillator and INTERVAL places the upper one as a ratio rather than a tempered musical interval. DETUNE breaks their symmetry and SHAPE changes harmonic content. ATTACK, DECAY, and DAMPING set the oscillator strike and lifetime.

BODY and BODY DECAY add a lower shell mode. NOISE, NOISE DECAY, and STRIKE TONE form the beater. BEND applies a positive or negative pitch offset that returns over BEND DECAY.

MIDI Articulations

MIDI RECEIVE defaults to OMNI; choose CH 1 through CH 16 to accept only that channel when several drum instruments share one sequencer stream.

NoteArticulationBehavior
56CowbellFull two-oscillator and shell voice.
57Muted CowbellShortened, damped metal response.
58High CowbellRaised, brighter articulation.

Other notes use the normal cowbell articulation and transpose it according to NOTE TRACKING.

Presets and Safe Random

The twelve presets include BALANCED BELL, LOW IRON, SHORT MUTE, HOLLOW ANALOG, WOODEN EDGE, and BENT METAL. RANDOM generates a bounded two-tone metal design while preserving OUTPUT GAIN, NOTE TRACKING, and VELOCITY SENSITIVITY.

Output

Width separates the upper oscillator, shell, and strike detail around the centered body. At 0%, both output channels carry the same mono signal.
